It’s finally summer! We hope that you all survived the long semester, amid all the heavy readings, countless assignments, numerous essays and crazy amounts of midterms inundating all of us! Over the past semester, the 51st HISSOC Exco organised several initiatives to connect with our fellow history majors and reach out to the public. Here’s a summary of what we have done over the past semester, as we take a trip down memory lane:
Chinese New Year’s Celebration
HISSOC organised the annual CNY gathering in Feburary to celebrate the coming of the lunar new year. We gave out mandarin oranges to the History Department teaching and admin staff, and organised a get-together for all history majors to “lohei” and revel in the joyous season!

Arts Open 2016
Team History competed in 5 different sports against other FASS majors in the annual Arts Open, happening during Recess Week. Well done all teams for your best effort out there in the blazing sun!

Congratuations to our Ultimate Frisbee team who came in second!

We hope to see you all again in next year’s Arts Open!
Project Scribe
Over the month of Feburary, HISSOC organised an oral history workshop for secondary school students who are participating in Project Scribe, an oral history competition. Through this workshop, the students discovered ways to interview the residents of Rochor Centre and understood the code of conduct to it.

After weeks of gathering information and learning about the lives of those who live in Rochor Centre, Project Scribe has finally concluded with all teams competitng for the top place in March. Congratulations to Team 7 from Dunman High School for taking the top prize!

We thank all participants for your contributions and hard work, as you all made an impact for preserving the history of Rochor Centre. We would like to also extend our gratitude to the judges and the organising committee for making this competition a success!
Battle for Singapore Pasir Panjang Tour
For past weeks, HISSOC collaborated with the National Heritage Board and NTU Heritage Club to conduct heritage walks for members of public in commemoration of the 74th Anniversary of the Fall of Singapore. Through the evening trails, we hope that participants would have a greater understanding of the valiant efforts of those who defended Singapore till the last man.

We thank all participants and our partners for your support, and all tour guides for your ceaseless efforts in making this journey a success
Welfare Week
Taking place on Week 12, HISSOC was stationed at the walkway along AS1 to give out the welfare packs to our HY and EU majors, as well as our freshmen taking the respective intro modules. The welfare giveaway was wildly popular, with packs flying off AS1 in the first 2 days and all our packs were finally given out on the last day. To those who missed the welfare pack distribution, better luck next semester!

Besides giving out welfare packs, we also launched our 9th issue of our semesterly publication, Mnemozine! Do check out the link here for a digital copy, or you can approach any of our HISSOC Exco members for the physical copy too!

HISSOC is also proud to launch our yearly limited edition cotton t-shirt for ALL History majors. Do check out our Facebook page for more details too!

It’s not students alone who needs welfare, but our wonderful History Department as well! It was great getting together with our professors and administrative staff while showing them gratitude for their hard work and concern.

Wrapping it up
Once again, thanks to everyone for supporting HISSOC. If you have any suggestions on what you hope to have for next semester’s activities, feel free to comment. Stay tuned on both our Facebook & Instagram pages as well as this website to find out about our upcoming events/activities! Look out for the upcoming FASS Open Day as well as our annual History Camp!
