Wrapping Up: AY 2015/16 Semester 2

It’s finally summer! We hope that you all survived the long semester, amid all the heavy readings, countless assignments, numerous essays and crazy amounts of midterms inundating all of us! Over the past semester, the 51st HISSOC Exco organised several initiatives to connect with our fellow history majors and reach out to the public. Here’s a summary of what we have done over the past semester, as we take a trip down memory lane:

Chinese New Year’s Celebration

HISSOC organised the annual CNY gathering in Feburary to celebrate the coming of the lunar new year. We gave out mandarin oranges to the History Department teaching and admin staff, and organised a get-together for all history majors to “lohei” and revel in the joyous season!

Project Scribe

Over the month of Feburary, HISSOC organised an oral history workshop for secondary school students who are participating in Project Scribe, an oral history competition. Through this workshop, the students discovered ways to interview the residents of Rochor Centre and understood the code of conduct to it.

Battle for Singapore Pasir Panjang Tour

For past weeks, HISSOC collaborated with the National Heritage Board and NTU Heritage Club to conduct heritage walks for members of public in commemoration of the 74th Anniversary of the Fall of Singapore. Through the evening trails, we hope that participants would have a greater understanding of the valiant efforts of those who defended Singapore till the last man.

Welfare Week

Taking place on Week 12, HISSOC was stationed at the walkway along AS1 to give out the welfare packs to our HY and EU majors, as well as our freshmen taking the respective intro modules. The welfare giveaway was wildly popular, with packs flying off AS1 in the first 2 days and all our packs were finally given out on the last day. To those who missed the welfare pack distribution, better luck next semester!

It’s not students alone who needs welfare, but our wonderful History Department as well! It was great getting together with our professors and administrative staff while showing them gratitude for their hard work and concern.
